The neighborhood
Barra da Lagoa is an old fishing village on the east side of the island: open sea, the canal, trails and seafood restaurants. A good part of what is worth doing is on foot, straight from the guesthouse.

Saltwater pools among the rocks, sheltered from the waves. The path runs along the shore and over the suspension bridge. Best at low tide with a calm sea.

The canal linking Lagoa da Conceição to the sea cuts through Barra, and it is where the fishing boats moor. The bridge is the postcard shot and the way to the trails.

A sea turtle conservation base, with visitor tanks, an exhibition and a shop. A short outing, great with children, rainy days included.

Over 7 km of undeveloped sand, inside Rio Vermelho State Park. For long walks and quiet. Strong surf: take care swimming.

A meeting point for surfers, with bars right on the sand and a hang gliding ramp on the hill next to it.

Famous for its waves and its sandboarding dunes. A good half-day option: beach and dunes on the same outing.

The dining and nightlife hub of the east side of the island, with stand up paddle and kitesurfing. The boats to Costa da Lagoa leave from here.
